Prof Basak Denizci Guillet is a Professor at the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She received a B.S. degree in tourism and hotel management from Bilkent University, a M.S. degree in hotel administration from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a Ph.D. degree in hospitality financial management from the Pennsylvania State University. She worked in the hotel industry as part of the Hilton and Marriot teams. She is the recipient of 2012 President Award for Excellent Performance and Achievement in Teaching, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and 2013 School of Hotel & Tourism Management Award for Research Excellence.

She is the contributing editor-book reviews of the Journal of Hospitality Financial Management and editorial board member of the International Journal of Hospitality Management, Journal of Revenue and Pricing Management, Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Administration, Anatolia and European Journal of Tourism Research. Prior to her appointment at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, she worked at University of South Carolina as an assistant professor.

Her academic research interests include customer perceptions in revenue management, corporate governance in hospitality, co-branding, valuation in the hospitality industry, and measuring human capital in service organizations. Prof Denizci Guillet has presented her research papers in several conferences including Annual International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (I-CHRIE) Conference, Asia Pacific Tourism Association Conference, Annual Conference and Exposition and Annual Conference of the Association of Hospitality Financial Management Education. She published her work in the Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research, International Journal of Hospitality Management, Journal of Hospitality Financial Management, Journal of Travel Research, Annals of Tourism Research, and the Journal of Intellectual Capital. She delivered workshops and training programs on strategic decision making from a hospitality financial management perspective and revenue management to hotel executives in South East Asia.

She is a member of International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (I-CHRIE), and she serves on the board of Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI). She served as co-secretary of Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP) South Carolina Chapter (2007-2008).

Mr Ian Lee

Ian Lee is the General Manager of Hotel ICON and Visiting Lecturer of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

As General Manager, Ian oversees the company’s financial strategy – including financial management, fiscal controls, internal audits, budgeting and planning. In addition to his role as Assistant General Manager, he also manages the human resource department, refining key functions such as compensation and benefits, training and development, recruiting and performance evaluation.

Prior to joining Hotel ICON, Ian was with Henderson Land Group for eight years. He held senior management positions including the roles of Assistant Vice President – Hotel Operation & Control of Henderson–Miramar Hotel Management Co. Ltd. and Vice President – Hotel Operation & Control of Miramar International Hotel Management Corporation, S.A.

As Vice President – Hotel Operation & Control, Ian was also a trusted business advisor to the Group’s President and owners. In this capacity, he managed a portfolio of hotels, serviced apartments and sales offices under the Group in Hong Kong, China and Taiwan. For this portfolio of properties, his key functions included monitoring and controlling their daily financial operations; working closely with all the key business units in formulating strategic business plans and overseeing budgeting. Ian also led a professional hotel operations team in new project evaluation, business plan development, feasibility study and pre-opening.

Often described as responsible, conscientious and caring, Ian began his career in 1991 in Texas, USA. He has over 25 years of experience in financial management, internal & external audit, management reporting and business evaluation. Before joining Henderson Land Group, Ian held several senior auditor posts at leading audit firms.

Ian holds a bachelor’s degree in business & administration and a master’s degree in business administration with merit. He is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FCPA).

Professor Haiyan Song is Chair Professor and Associate Dean (Research) of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His research focuses on tourism demand modelling and forecasting, service recovery, tourist satisfaction, and wine economics. He has played significant roles in a number of international consultancy and collaborative projects, covering tourist satisfaction and service quality indices, Asia Pacific visitor forecasts, web-based tourism demand forecasting system, and development of the Guangdong tourist satellite account, which have considerable impact on tourist destination management.

Professor Song has published over 150 papers in top-tier journals in related fields, including Journal of Development Economics, Annals of Tourism Research, Tourism Management, Journal of Travel Research, and International Journal of Hospitality Management. Chief among his contributions to academic publishing are the leading roles he plays as Editor-in-Chief of Journal of China Tourism Research, Resource Editor of Annals of Tourism Research, and Deputy Executive Editor of Tourism Tribune. A frequent guest speaker on international conference circuit, Professor Song has shared his professional insights on issues ranging from tourism impact assessment, tourist satisfaction and service quality indices, tourism demand forecasting, to consumer behavioural studies.

Among his professional affiliations, he is President of both the International Association for Tourism Economics (IATE) and International Association for China Tourism Studies (IACTS) and is a Fellow of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism (IAST). The honours he received include the John Wiley & Sons Lifetime Research Achievement Award by the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education in 2010 and Michael D. Olsen Research Achievement Award by University of Delaware in 2014.

A former hotel manager and tourism industry consultant, Professor Kaye Chon (Ph.D., CHE, FIH) is Dean and Chair Professor and Walter & Wendy Kwok Family Foundation Professor in International Hospitality Management of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Prior to being appointed as Dean, Dean Chon has assumed the roles of Director and Chair Professor of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management since year 2000. 

Under Dean Chon’s leadership, the School has arisen as one of the world’s leading institutions in hospitality and tourism management. The School is rated No. 1 in the world in the “Hospitality and Tourism Management” category according to ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2017, placed among the top 3 “Hospitality and Leisure Management” institutions globally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017 and ranked No. 1 in the world in the “Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism” subject area by the CWUR Rankings by Subject 2017.

Dean Chon previously held academic positions at the University of Houston, University of Nevada, Las Vegas and Virginia Tech in the US. 

Dean Chon is a graduate of the University of Maryland (AA), Georgia State University (BSc), University of Nevada, Las Vegas (MSc), and Virginia Tech (Ph.D.).

A frequent speaker at international conferences, Dean Chon has published over 200 papers in international journals and professional publications and has authored or edited ten books. One of his co-authored books, Welcome to Hospitality: An Introduction has been adopted as a textbook in more than 100 hospitality education programmes world-wide. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Travel & Tourism Marketing and the Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research. 

Dean Chon is recognised internationally for his research, scholarship and academic leadership in the areas of Hospitality Management, Hospitality and Tourism Marketing and Convention Tourism. Throughout his career, he has presented lectures, seminars and speeches in more than 90 countries across all continents of the world.

In his university teaching that spans over 30 years, Dean Chon twice received “Teaching Excellence Award” and four times received “Research Excellence Award,” including the John Wiley & Sons Lifetime Research Award and Howard B. Meek Award from International CHRIE, Martin Oppermann Memorial Award from the International Society of Travel & Tourism Educators (ISTTE), Michael D. Olsen Award from the University of Delaware, and Founder’s Award from Purdue University and the University of South Carolina, all for his lifetime contribution to scholarship and research in tourism/hospitality. In 2003, he received the prestigious Fred Tibbitts Associates Hospitality Humanitarian Award from Fred Tibbitts and Associates of New York for his leadership and community services in global hospitality industry development. He was twice recognised by his alma mater Georgia State University, once in 2003 as the “Most Outstanding Alumni in 30 Years”, and then in 2014 as one of the honourees of the Robinson Global Business Alumni Award. He was honoured by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) with the prestigious UNWTO Ulysses Prize 2011. In 2015, he was appointed Walter Kwok Foundation Professor in International Hospitality Management.

Dean Chon is the past President and Chairman of the International Society of Travel and Tourism Educators and former member of the Executive Board of Pacific Asia Travel Association. 

He has been listed in Who’s Who In The World.

Dr Tony Tse

As a faculty member at the School of Hotel and Tourism Management since 2009, Tony has taught subjects including Aviation Policy (Bachelor level), Managing Marketing in Hotel and Tourism Industry (Masters level), and Hotel & Tourism Management Education (Doctoral level). As the industry partnerships director, he is responsible for industry liaison, executive education, and consultancy projects. He is a member of the School Management Committee.

Tony Tse has served a number of consulting projects, including Lantau Island Recreation and Tourism Development Strategy for the Hong Kong Government, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Tourism Impact Study, Tourism Management Curriculum Development for King Abdulaziz University, UNWTO TedQual Certification for Chengdu Polytechnic, Guilin Fuda Tourism Strategic Development, Guilin Golden Oriole Hotel Rebranding Study, Zhengzhou Haima Group Hotel Projects, and Business Case for a Proposed Jamaica Centre of Tourism Innovation.

Tony Tse was previously the General Manager, Marketing Communications, of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, and during that time he launched a new ‘City of Life’ marketing campaign and revamped the website, which helped grow inbound tourism to Hong Kong. Before joining Hong Kong Tourism Board, Tony had worked for Ogilvy & Mather Advertising for 18 years – in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, and Sydney.

Tony Tse is a graduate of the University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor degree in Social Sciences. He has an MBA degree from Macquarie University and PhD degree from Southern Cross University, both in Australia. His research area is China’s outbound tourism and hospitality education. He is a Certified Hospitality Educator awarded by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute, and Accredited Mediator.

Tony Tse is a member of the Board of Directors at the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong (2012-2017), member of the Council’s Compliance Committee and Training Committee (2012-2017), and member of the Council’s Appeal Board (2004-2010).

Dr. Catherine Cheung

Catherine Cheung PhD is Associate Professor and Associate Dean at School of Hotel and Tourism Management of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and a specialist in the study of Hotel Management. Her major administrative duty is to facilitate and co-ordinate the international student exchanges at the SHTM and she is the Program Leader of the Master of Science (MSc) in Global Hospitality Business. Catherine holds a BA and MA degrees from Macquarie University in Australia and a PhD in research from the University of Strathclyde. She is a Certified Hospitality Educator awarded by the American Hotel and Lodging Association Educational Institute, and a Trainer for Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics (CHIA).

Catherine Cheung oversees quality assurance of teaching and learning within the school and the school’s efforts on internationalization. Her research interests are in the area of Hospitality Human Resources Management, Service Quality and Yield Management. She has authored and co-authored over 70 research papers and supervised over 12 Doctoral students to completion. She has been involved in consultancy projects for hotels, airlines, clubs and hospital in the areas of service quality and human resources management in Asia. She has numerous years of working experience in opening hotels in Hong Kong, Australia and Taipei.

Professor Cathy Hsu

Cathy Hsu is the Chair Professor of Hospitality and Tourism Marketing in the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Prior to joining PolyU in July 2001, she was teaching in the USA for 12 years in two different state universities. Before becoming an academic, she worked in the hotel industry as part of the Hilton and Holiday Inns teams.

Her most recent co-authored book, Tourism: The Business of Hospitality and Travel (6th ed.), was published by Prentice Hall in 2017. She is the lead author of the book Tourism Marketing: An Asia-Pacific Perspective, published in 2008 by John Wiley & Sons Australia. She also authored two Chinese textbooks on tourism marketing, one published in 2009 by Renmin University Press, Beijing and one published in 2011 by Yang-Chih Book Co. Ltd., Taiwan.

Her research foci have been tourist behaviors, resident sentiment, and hospitality marketing and branding. She has obtained numerous extramural and intramural grants and has over 300 refereed publications. She has served as a consultant to various hospitality organizations, such as the Garden Hotel in Guangzhou, City of Dreams in Macao, Hong Kong Tourism Board, World Tourism Organization, and Kansas Travel and Tourism Development Division. She has provided training to numerous hotel and tourism organizations over the years on service quality, branding, and marketing.

Professor Hsu serves on 15 journal editorial boards. She received the John Wiley & Sons Lifetime Research Achievement Award in 2009 and International Society of Travel and Tourism Educator’s Martin Oppermann Memorial Award for Lifetime Contribution to Tourism Education in 2011.

Dr Qu Xiao

Dr Qu Xiao is an Associate Professor and the Program Leader of the Doctor of Hotel and Tourism Management (China) Program at School of Hotel and Tourism Management, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). He specializes in teaching and researching in strategic management, hotel development and investment, and hospitality innovations. Previously, Dr Xiao was an instructor at the School of Hospitality Management at The Pennsylvania State University. Prior to becoming an academic, Dr Xiao had over 10 years of experiences in hotel and tourism industries, including holding various management and operational positions with major U.S. hotel chains such as Hilton, IHG, Marriott and ESA. He had also worked for Mobile Travel Guide as well as hospitality consulting firms in the U.S., where he conducted a number of projects related to hotel investment and development strategies, branding strategies, management contract negotiations, operator and franchise evaluation, and strategic alliance formation. Prior to his hotel experience, Dr Xiao was a journalist of China Tourism News.

Since he joined PolyU in 2007, Dr Xiao has conducted consultancy projects for hospitality and tourism investors in over 10 provinces in China. He has also trained hundreds of hotel corporate executives and GMs from renowned international and Chinese hotel management and ownership companies, such as Shangri-la, Marriott International, New Century Hotels, BTG-Jianguo Hotels, Jinling Hotels & Resorts, GDH Hotel Groups, China Jinmao Group, OCT Hotels, R&F Properties, etc. He serves as Director of the Strategic Planning Committee of China Hotel Owners Alliance. In addition to being a popular speaker in many hotel industry conferences, Dr Xiao also represents the School of Hotel and Tourism Management of PolyU and has served as the Coordinator and Program Chair to organize the 2nd – 10th International Forum on China Hotel Brand Development and the 11th – 12th China Tourism Forum, both of which had been successfully held annually in various cities in China since 2008.

Dr Xiao holds a BA from Beijng Normal University in Chinese Language and Literature, a Master of Hospitality Management from the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at University of Houston, and a Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University in Hospitality Management.

Ms. Angela Chu


Veteran of Revenue Management



Angela was a graduate of Hotel and Food Administration at University of Guelph (Canada) and has her master degree from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She has more than 16 years of hospitality industry experience with extensive international exposures and specializing in revenue management. She has worked in several international chain hotels, including Marriott International, Starwood Hotels, InterContinental Hotel, Hyatt and Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

As an expatriate, she had the opportunity to travel and work in various locations with different market situations and hotel types. This allows her to gain international exposure to new cultures and environments which help to develop strong communication skill. In her previous role as Director of Revenue, she focused not only on maximizing total hotel revenue, but as well as the long-term strategic planning. She was also part of the Executive Committee members and involved in other departmental critical decisions.

Angela Chu is currently pursuing her doctoral degree at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University meanwhile assisting to teach revenue management subject for the undergraduate students. Her thesis topic is focusing on the application of revenue management in the cruise industry.

Dr Jane Suporn

Dr. Jane Suporn’s experience spans more than 20 years, 8 countries, and in various senior positions, leading analytics and revenue management teams for the top hospitality groups in the world and region including, Disney, Starwood, IHG, Hilton, Wharf Hotels, Wanda Themed Entertainment, and Mandarin Meritus Hotels Group. She has led teams based throughout the region including, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney, Shanghai, Bangkok and Beijing.

She speaks Thai, English, Mandarin and holds degrees from leading universities in Australia, Thailand, and Hong Kong including a business degree from Assumption University, a master in marketing from the University of New South Wales, and Doctorate of Hotel and Tourism Management from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s School of Hotel and Tourism Management.

Dr. Suporn’s skills include building analytics and revenue management teams from the ground up, formulating theme park and hotel business strategies, including pricing, channel distribution, demand planning, and financial analysis for key revenue generation areas, including room rates, admission, food & beverage, merchandise and ancillary revenues.

Some of her key accomplishments include:

•    As former head of revenue management & analytics for Disney parks Asia, she was responsible for the revenue management of approximately USD 2 Billion in annual revenues and every aspect of pricing, planning and forecasting, budgeting, channel distribution strategy for the highly anticipated and successful opening of Disney Shanghai in 2016.

•    As global head of revenue management & analytics for Wanda Themed Entertainment, she led all analytics teams across Wanda’s 36 operational theme parks and 14 theme parks under development.

•    She headed the revenue teams for the global portfolios of Wharf Hotels and Mandarin Meritus Hotels Group.

•    She managed revenue and analytics for InterContinental Hotels Group in Thailand and Starwood properties in Sydney.

Cindy is a consultant in hospitality service and organization development, a facilitator in leadership skills, team effectiveness and etiquette workshops, and an organisational coach. With her well-rounded skills and years of experience, Cindy works across a wide range of industries in Asia, tailoring workshop and project to meet the needs of the individuals and the organisation. Her clients are not limited to the hospitality industry but also in healthcare, government, universities, law, electronics and fashion. 

Cindy is a seasoned hotelier and educator who has over 20 years of hospitality experience in operations, event sales, marketing communications, learning and development, and human resources. She has delivered workshops up to 250 participants in multicultural environment around the globe, including Mexico, The Caribbean, US, UK, Switzerland, China, Cambodia, Laos, Philippines and Vietnam. 

Cindy founded SoTi Consulting in May 2018 with the aim to offer unique solutions for her clients in the areas of leadership effectiveness, presentation skills, personal branding, business and social etiquette, design thinking, luxury service delivery and hotel opening. She also offers workshop to equip university students with the skills and appearance required for future career development. 

Cindy started her career with Grand Hyatt Hong Kong in 1995. In her role as the director of learning and development for Hyatt Regency Sha Tin, she opened the Hyatt Learning Centre and was an integral member in the HK$1.3 billion project – A partnership with the School of Hotel and Tourism Management of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She also spearheaded a team in cultivating innovation for Hyatt when the hotel was selected as one of the lab hotels for the group in 2011.

During her 5-year employment with Rosewood Hotel Group since 2012, currently one of the fastest growing hotel management company in the world, Cindy revamped the entire L&D program for the company, delivered leadership programmes to hotel executives, provided consultancy to the HR teams of existing and new projects, executed simulations (trial run) for new hotels in different continents and started up the company CSR initiatives. Her last project with the company was to establish the culture for a new hotel brand. 

Cindy is a member of many international wine and culinary associations, including the Commanderie de Bordeaux, the Ordre des Coteaux de Champagne, Jurade de Saint Emilion, Ordine dei Cavaliere del Tartufo e dei Vini di Alba, Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rotisseurs, Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin and the Confrade of the Confraria do Vinho do Porto.

Cindy is a graduate of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University with a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management and a master’s degree in international hospitality management. She has a 2nd bachelor’s degree in fine arts at the Royal Melbourne Institute (RMIT). She is also a certified organisational coach by Institute of Executive Coach & Leadership. Cindy is a licensed trainer for Situational Leadership II, Insights Discovery; and a certified educator for WSET wine training level I (Service and Wine) and II (Wine).

Mr Ronnie Cheng




Ronnie’s first hotel job was at The Regent of Hong Kong, which was ranked as the number one hotel by the Institute of Investors in the 80’s. In 1993, he became a member of the opening team of the first Ritz Carlton in Hong Kong.

In the year 2000, Ronnie moved to China to capitalize on major growth opportunities for international hotel chains in the mainland. He quickly became the general manager of Marriott in Wuhan and Shenyang.

Shortly after, Ronnie joined the Garden Hotel Guangzhou and brought about constructive and productive change to the hotel. Through his veteran management experience and insightful knowledge, the Garden Hotel was bestowed the Platinum five stars award in 2007. In 2010, The Garden was chosen as the official HQ hotel of the 16th Asian Games. Ronnie orchestrated the hotel to bring about flawless operation sequences during the games. Ronnie was also put in charge of the mother company, Ling Nam International Hotel Management Company during his time with the Garden.

Several years later, Ronnie sought another hotel planning and opening project to refine and enhance his experience. In 2013, Ronnie opened The Langham Place Guangzhou. As the general manager, Ronnie has conducted the hotel’s operating rhythm to his pace, earning the hotel multiple awards such as: “Best new hotel” and “best MICE hotel” in Guangzhou.

Ronnie owns a myriad of awards including the China Hotel Starlight Awards - Best General Manager of China Hotel Industry. He is also one of the vice chairman of the China Hotel Industry Celebrity Club.

With a plethora of management, operations, and development experience, Ronnie breaks down the hotel industry into micro-management segments that he passionately dives into. Be it revenue management, sales strategies, P&L analysis, or the implementing of CSR policies, Ronnie’s treasury of experience and perceptive acumen is valued by even the most established hospitality veterans.

Dr Carmen Lam is a hospitality and tourism industry sales, marketing and customer experience specialist, having led regional and functional teams of some of the most global luxury hospitality companies in the world including the Shangri-La Group, the IHG Group, and the Accor Group. Additional exposure through stints with Hong Kong’s national tourism organization as well as MICROS, the market leader in hospitality technology, has provided her with good grounding in destination marketing and solid technological orientation for the digital era.

Her specialty lies in strategy development and repositioning, and how to turn strategy into action to achieve competitive advantage. She takes a holistic approach to branding and market positioning, covering product, service, system, process and people alignment. Well-versed with Asian consumer needs and preferences as well as global distribution channels, she applies multiple levers to change management and an agile approach to organizational structure to support digitalization to meet the needs of connected customers and partner communities.

Dr Lam has cross-industry experience, having led teams in mixed-use integrated resorts and a real estate development company with multiple portfolios. Having lived and worked in HK, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and North America, she applies multi-cultural management techniques and is a certified Hofstede intercultural management consultant and coach.

Some of her key areas of achievement include:

· Change management and introduction of new metrics to align the operations and customer management behaviour of a real estate developer in Thailand to create a customer-centric culture

· Structuring and establishment of the Asia Pacific regional sales and marketing team for a multi-brand Canadian luxury hotel operator leveraging bench strength of virtual offices across China, Singapore and Hong Kong

· Introduction of an established American limited service brand to China by translating the core brand essence into meaningful execution for the Chinese market

· Implementation of a centralized reservations and customer data and management system for a luxury hotel management company in Asia

· Establishment of the first dedicated B2B digital platform in Asia to communicate with a network of local and overseas partners to market Hong Kong as a destination

Deniz Kucukusta PhD is an Associate Professor at the School of Hotel and Tourism Management in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She holds MSc and PhD degrees in Tourism and Hotel Management. Prior to her academic career, Dr Kucukusta spent several years working in the hotel and travel industry in Turkey. After her PhD, she worked as a post-doctoral research associate on a project about medical tourism development in Hong Kong. She is a Certified Hospitality Educator awarded by the American Hotel and Lodging Association Educational Institute.

Her academic research interests are strategic management, human resources management in the hospitality industry, and health and wellness tourism. She published her work in top-tier academic journals, including the International Journal of Hospitality Management, Tourism Management, Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing, and International Journal of Tourism Research, etc. She teaches graduate-level subjects including Design for Hospitality and Managing Human Resources in Hospitality and Tourism Industry.

Sebastian Filep PhD is an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean at the School of Hotel and Tourism Management of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Dr Filep has an established international track record of research focusing on well-being and tourist experiences, primarily drawing from the field of positive psychology. Dr Filep is on the editorial boards of multiple, major journals in tourism, leisure and hospitality fields.

Apart from the key research interest in well-being, Dr Filep has contributed to international research consultancy projects on sustainability and climate change. This included funded international consultancy research projects on climate change and sustainable tourism policies for government ministries (e.g. Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia; Ministry of Tourism, Trade, Industry - Department of Tourism, Vanuatu).
